Meet Douglas Huff

Attorney Douglas Huff was born in Warren, Ohio and was raised outside of Pittsburgh, in the Appalachian area of southwestern Pennsylvania. His family has lived in the area for many generations as farmers, coal miners, and steel workers. He was a proud Mount Pleasant Viking attending Mount Pleasant Area Junior – Senior High School. After high school, Douglas enlisted in the United States Army and served for four years receiving the Army Achievement Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. His last duty station brought him to Texas at Fort Hood, (now named Fort Cavazos). He received an honorable discharge after completing his full term of service and relocated to Austin, Texas.

After the Army, Douglas worked in business sales for tech companies such as Dell Computers, XO Communications, and Time Warner while completing his undergraduate degree at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas. Go Hilltoppers! Douglas then attended St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio and completed his MBA through Florida Institute of Technology. After law school, Douglas relocated to the Dallas area.

Douglas was previously married, right out of high school, and had one beautiful daughter, Sorsha, who is also an attorney with Deandra Grant Law. He is recently remarried to his lovely wife, Monique, a lawyer and a judge, and they have an 8 year old rescue, Athena, who we believe is an Australian Cattle Dog, weighs 60 pounds, and thinks she is a lap dog.

When not preparing for the next trial, Douglas loves to travel, having visited many countries across Europe, Asia, and South America including walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain. He loves a good game of poker and can be found playing tournaments regularly around the country. He attends live music concerts (his first concert was Motley Crue!) and finds the most bizarre events to attend from circuses to wrestling.

Additionally, Douglas is an avid reader, usually actively reading three books at a time. His favorite book is Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, which he attributes to inspiring him to become a criminal defense attorney. His favorite quote is “I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody’s around – nobody big, I mean – except me. And I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff – I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all.”

Lawyer Stuff:

Douglas has been practicing criminal defense for over a decade and it is his passion. Since his first DWI case as a law student at the criminal defense clinic at the University of Texas School of law to his most recent trial he sees his opportunity to protect those that but for the grace of God, could be many of us.

Initially, Douglas opened his own law firm in Dallas and represented both appointed and retained clients. In 2013, he closed his private practice and accepted a position with the Dallas County

Public Defender’s Office where he worked diligently as the lead attorney in many DWI trials and other misdemeanors. Additionally, he has assisted numerous clients through plea negotiations, led many evidentiary hearings, and prepared and took part in felony trials.

Douglas joined Deandra Grant Law in 2016. He became a partner in 2021. He is a top-rated attorney and as Senior Trial Attorney for Deandra Grant Law, he has been involved in trials throughout the state of Texas from misdemeanor thefts to murder.

He has written multiple articles for publications such as Voice for the Defense and Attorney at Law Magazine. Additionally, he has lectured nationally and throughout the state of Texas on criminal defense and trial strategy and tactics.

Douglas has earned the Lawyer-Scientist designation from the American Chemical Society after completing courses in Forensic Chromatography, Forensic Drug Analysis and Forensic Driving Under the Influence of Drugs at Axion Labs in Chicago.

Additionally, he has completed both the student course on standardized field sobriety testing (SFST’s) and the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) course. These courses are the same programs that police officers are trained in using the materials from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on how to identify intoxicated drivers by drugs or alcohol.
