Deandra Grant Law - Criminal & DWI Defense defends federal sex-crime charges investigated by the FBI and prosecutors
Federal sex crime charges are among the most serious in the criminal justice system. Mandatory minimum sentences measured in years or decades. Lifetime sex offender registration that determines where you can live, work, and travel for the rest of your life. Federal supervised release conditions that continue for years after prison. These consequences do not diminish with time, and a conviction at any age defines the rest of a person’s life.
Every person charged with a federal crime is entitled to a vigorous defense. That right matters most precisely when the charges are most serious and the consequences most severe. Federal sex crime investigations are conducted by the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and other agencies with substantial resources and years of investigative lead time before any arrest is made. Defending against that investigation requires counsel with the federal trial depth and forensic science capability to meet the government on equal terms.
At Deandra Grant Law, Attorney James Lee Bright leads our federal sex crimes defense. Lee has spent more than 25 years defending clients against the most serious federal charges in all four Texas federal districts, the District of Columbia, and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Our firm also brings a unique capability for challenging digital evidence that is central to nearly every federal sex crime prosecution: Partner Douglas Huff holds ACS-CHAL Forensic Lawyer-Scientist credentials and is trained in digital forensics. In cases built on forensic examination of computers, phones, peer-to-peer network logs, and digital communications (which describes the vast majority of federal sex crime prosecutions) this combination of federal trial experience and digital forensic capability is a significant and rare defense advantage.

Compelling labor or sexual conduct through force or coercion, a serious felony.
Read About This ChargeFederal jurisdiction. Federal sex crime charges arise when the alleged conduct crosses state or international borders, involves the internet or interstate communications, occurs on federal property, or involves victims transported across state lines. Once federal jurisdiction attaches, the case is prosecuted in federal court under federal statutes with mandatory minimum sentences that state courts cannot impose. A first-time offender convicted of a federal CSAM offense can face a mandatory minimum sentence that a state court judge would have no power to reduce.
Digital evidence at the center of most cases. Most federal sex crime prosecutions (particularly those involving child sexual abuse material and online enticement) are built almost entirely on digital evidence: forensic examination of electronic devices, internet protocol records, peer-to-peer network logs, and preserved chat communications. The reliability of this evidence depends on whether proper forensic acquisition protocols were followed, whether the government’s interpretation of the data is accurate, and whether the attribution of specific conduct to a specific individual (rather than another user of the same network or device) is adequately supported.
Undercover operations. A significant proportion of federal online enticement and travel offense prosecutions arise from undercover law enforcement operations in which agents pose as minors in online communications. These operations raise specific legal issues, including the availability of the entrapment defense, the adequacy of probable cause based on the government’s own conduct, and whether the defendant’s communications reflect a predisposition to engage in the alleged conduct or a response to government inducement.
Sex offender registration. Federal sex crime convictions trigger registration obligations under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). Most federal sex crime convictions result in Tier III classification requiring lifetime registration. Registration restrictions affect residence, employment, internet access, and international travel. Violation of SORNA registration requirements is itself a federal felony carrying up to 10 years in prison.
Mandatory minimums with limited judicial discretion. Unlike most federal offenses, many federal sex crimes carry mandatory minimum sentences that the court cannot reduce regardless of individual circumstances, criminal history, or mitigating factors. The specific charges filed (possession versus receipt versus distribution versus production of CSAM, for example) determine which mandatory minimum applies, and challenging how the government has characterized the offense can be the most important defense strategy in the case.
Federal CSAM offenses under 18 U.S.C. §2252 and §2252A, online enticement under §2422(b), and travel offenses under §2423 are the most commonly charged federal sex crimes in the Northern District of Texas. These cases are built almost entirely on digital evidence, and the forensic integrity of that evidence (how devices were examined, how files are attributed to the defendant, and whether the government’s interpretation of network logs is accurate) is where the defense is most often won or lost.
Federal child sexual assault charges under 18 U.S.C. §2241, §2242, and §2243 arise when the alleged conduct occurs in the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States: military bases, national parks, federal buildings, federally controlled waters, and other federal lands. These cases involve different jurisdictional and evidentiary issues than state court sexual assault prosecutions, and they are tried before federal judges and juries under the Federal Rules of Evidence.
Federal sex trafficking charges under 18 U.S.C. §1591 are aggressively prosecuted throughout Texas, with the Northern District (covering Dallas-Fort Worth) among the highest-volume human trafficking prosecution districts in the country. These cases frequently involve multi-defendant investigations, cooperating witness testimony, and allegations that span multiple jurisdictions and sometimes international borders. Of Counsel James Lee Bright’s experience in complex multi-defendant federal cases and his admission to all four Texas federal districts and the Fifth Circuit makes him uniquely positioned to defend trafficking charges at every level.
Every federal sex crime case begins with a comprehensive review of the government’s investigation: how it began, what techniques were used to gather evidence, whether Fourth Amendment and statutory requirements were met, and whether the evidence actually supports the charges as filed. That review drives everything that follows: whether to challenge the evidence through suppression motions, contest the government’s characterization of the offense and the mandatory minimum it triggers, develop an entrapment defense based on the specifics of an undercover operation, or focus on sentencing mitigation when a conviction is the most likely outcome.
James Lee Bright has spent more than 25 years defending clients against the most serious federal charges in courts across Texas and the country.
Federal sex crime investigations are typically at an advanced stage before any arrest is made. If you have been contacted by federal agents, received a target letter, or had devices seized pursuant to a search warrant, the investigation is well underway. Early legal intervention (before charges are formally filed if possible) provides the greatest opportunity to assess the government’s evidence, identify challenges, and engage with prosecutors while options remain open.
