Facing a Sex Crime Allegation in Tarrant County?

Deandra Grant Law defends people accused of sex offenses in Fort Worth and throughout Tarrant County. The Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office prosecutes these cases through a dedicated sexual assault unit, and most charges in this family are felonies heard at the Tim Curry Criminal Justice Center. An accusation alone can cost a job, a custody arrangement, and a reputation, which is why the defense has to start quietly and early, before charges are filed when possible.

These cases are built on evidence that can be examined: the recorded interview, the phone extraction, the forensic testing. Partner Douglas Huff is an ACS-CHAL Forensic Lawyer-Scientist with digital forensics training, and managing partner Deandra Grant is a former prosecutor with more than 30 years of trial experience. When the State’s case is an account plus a forensic record, we take the record apart piece by piece.

    Local Knowledge

What Actually Happens to a Sex Crime Case in Tarrant County

Tarrant County runs its criminal cases differently from the counties around it. These are the local specifics that shape a defense here.

    Where your case is heard

Most sex offense charges are felonies, heard in the district courts at the Tim Curry Criminal Justice Center. Misdemeanor charges like indecent exposure go to the County Criminal Courts. The arrest books at the Tarrant County Corrections Center next door, and the physical evidence is tested at the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's crime laboratory.

    Who prosecutes

The Tarrant County District Attorney maintains a dedicated sexual assault unit, staffed by prosecutors who try these cases every day. The defense has to be built to that standard.

    The interview is the case

Cases involving children are usually built on a recorded forensic interview. How that interview was conducted is examinable, and we examine it.

    The devices are the case

Solicitation and image cases rest on phone extractions and chat logs. Douglas Huff's digital forensics training means those get read at the technical level, not accepted.

    Grand jury review comes first

Every Texas felony passes through a grand jury before indictment. A defense packet presented at that stage can end a case before a charge is ever filed, and accusation-driven cases are where that presentation matters most.

    Registration is the lasting penalty

Most convictions in this family, and some deferred adjudications, carry sex offender registration under Chapter 62 for ten years or for life. Which outcomes are reportable and which are not drives every decision we make in a Tarrant County case.

    Registration rules

    Indecency with a child cases

Indecency with a child under Penal Code 21.11 is a second-degree felony by contact and a third-degree felony by exposure. The State's case is usually an outcry statement plus a recorded forensic interview, and we examine how that interview was taken.

    Why Deandra Grant Law

    What Sets This Defense Apart

What decides a sex crime case is how well your lawyer understands the evidence.

    Former Prosecutor
Deandra Grant prosecuted cases as a Dallas County Assistant DA, so she knows exactly how the State builds them.
    Two Forensic Lawyer-Scientists
Deandra Grant and Douglas Huff both hold the ACS-CHAL Forensic Lawyer-Scientist designation from the American Chemical Society.
    Digital Forensics Training
Douglas Huff has completed digital forensics training, and phone extractions and device evidence get examined, not accepted.
    500+ Trials Since 1994
We work only in DWI and criminal defense, and we have tried more than 500 cases to verdict.
    Published Authorities
Seventeen legal books and resources, including the treatise other Texas defense attorneys keep on their desks.
    We Read the Evidence
Lab reports, phone extractions, DNA: we request the underlying records and challenge them at the technical level, not the summary the State hands over.
    After You Hire Us

What We Do on Every Case

From the first call, in order:

    • Reach the case before indictment when we can, where a grand jury packet can end it before a charge is filed
    • Demand the dash, body, and surveillance video before it’s destroyed
    • Pull the full discovery file under Article 39.14: offense reports, witness statements, forensic records
    • Examine the forensic evidence ourselves: lab records, chain of custody, the underlying data, not the summary
    • Investigate the case the police didn’t: the witnesses never interviewed, the footage never pulled
    • File the motions the evidence supports, because suppression is how weak cases end
    • Build your mitigation file, with clinical assessments, at no cost to you
    • Try the case if the offer isn’t right, which is why the offers get better

We quote a flat fee after a consultation at no cost to you, so the investment is known before you commit.

I’m so appreciative of working with Deandra Grant Law. I had the pleasure to work with Sorsha and Kevin, both were very supportive and communicative throughout the process. My needs were unique given that I am a veteran and had to work with the Veteran’s Treatment Court which required quite a bit of red tape to work through and I’m glad I had this firm to ensure my acceptance into the Veteran’s Treatment Court. Thank you and I totally recommend this firm to all especially my fellow veterans.

    Serving All of Tarrant County

We defend sex crime cases from every corner of Tarrant County: Fort Worth itself plus Arlington, Hurst, Euless, Bedford, North Richland Hills, Grapevine, Keller, Mansfield, Haltom City, and Watauga. Wherever the arrest happened, the case lands at Tim Curry, and our Fort Worth sex crimes attorneys are in that building every week. An arrest anywhere in the county books at the Tarrant County Corrections Center downtown, beside the courthouse, and the physical evidence goes to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s crime laboratory. Our Tarrant County court guide walks through the building and the docket.

    Arlington

Arlington police run their own special victims investigations, but every case they build is filed with the Tarrant County District Attorney and heard at Tim Curry in Fort Worth, not in Arlington. Child forensic interviews from Arlington cases are recorded at the Alliance For Children center there.

    Grapevine, Southlake, and Colleyville

Grapevine reaches into Dallas and Denton counties, so where the alleged offense happened decides which county prosecutes. A Southlake or Colleyville accusation is always a Tarrant County case, and one that starts inside Carroll ISD or Grapevine-Colleyville ISD usually arrives with a school and CPS investigation running at the same time.

    Keller

Keller police investigate accusations inside Keller and most of Keller ISD, and the case is prosecuted by the same Tarrant County sexual assault unit that handles Fort Worth. Northeast Tarrant cases are heard downtown at Tim Curry, not at the Northeast Subcourthouse in Hurst.

    Euless, Hurst, and Bedford

The Mid-Cities departments each investigate their own cases, and the Alliance For Children northeast center in Hurst is where a child complainant from this part of the county is interviewed. Our office is fourteen minutes west on Airport Freeway.

    Mansfield

Mansfield spans Tarrant, Johnson, and Ellis counties, so the address of the alleged offense decides the courthouse. A Tarrant County accusation goes to Tim Curry, and a Johnson County one goes to Cleburne.

    Burleson

Burleson sits across the Tarrant and Johnson county line. A Johnson County case is heard at the Guinn Justice Center in Cleburne, where we also appear. Our Johnson County courts guide covers that docket.

Every charge we defend here has its own walkthrough: Fort Worth Criminal Defense Lawyer, Fort Worth DWI Lawyer, Fort Worth Domestic Violence Lawyer, Fort Worth Assault Lawyer, and Fort Worth Drug Crimes Lawyer. The statewide guides start at our Texas sex crimes defense page.

Fort Worth Sex Crimes Defense Questions, Answered

I have been accused but not arrested. What should I do?

As little as possible, publicly. Do not contact the accuser, do not give a statement, and do not consent to a device search. Accusation-driven cases are often decided by what happens before an arrest: the interview, the forensic exam, the grand jury. A lawyer can engage at that stage, quietly.

Will I have to register as a sex offender?

Registration depends on the specific charge and the outcome, and some non-conviction outcomes can still carry it. Which resolutions require registration and which do not is central to how we defend these cases, because the registry, not the sentence, is usually the lasting penalty.

Which court will my Fort Worth case be in?

Felony sex offense charges are heard in the district courts at the Tim Curry Criminal Justice Center at 401 W. Belknap Street. Misdemeanor charges go to the County Criminal Courts in the same building. Your court assignment appears on your bond paperwork.

What if the accusation is false?

False and mistaken accusations happen, and they are defended with evidence, not indignation: the timeline, the devices, the interview methodology, the forensic record. The worst mistake is assuming the truth will surface on its own.

Can my case be dismissed before trial?

Some are. Felonies can be no-billed by the grand jury, charges can be rejected or reduced at intake, and suppression of illegally obtained evidence can leave the State unable to proceed. Whether any of those paths is open depends on the evidence, which is why we pull the full discovery file first.

How much does a Fort Worth sex crimes lawyer cost?

It varies with the charge level and whether the case is headed to trial, and we are direct about numbers at the first call. The consultation is free, we offer payment plans, and we quote a flat fee so the investment is known before you commit.

What is the statute of limitations for sexual assault in Texas?

Ten years for sexual assault or aggravated sexual assault of an adult, under Article 12.01 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. There is no limitation at all for sexual assault or aggravated sexual assault of a child, indecency with a child, or continuous sexual abuse, and none for an adult sexual assault where biological evidence was collected and tested without identifying a suspect, or where the State alleges the same offense against five or more people. So an accusation about something years old can still be charged in Tarrant County. Our sexual assault guide covers the charge itself.

What happens after a sexual assault accusation in Tarrant County?

A report goes to the police department where the alleged offense happened, and a detective will usually ask you for an interview. Decline it until you have a lawyer. A forensic exam and any devices go to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's crime laboratory. If a warrant issues, you are booked at the Tarrant County Corrections Center downtown, a magistrate sets bond, and the file goes to the District Attorney's sexual assault unit. A felony then goes to a grand jury before it can be indicted and set in a district court at the Tim Curry Criminal Justice Center. Every one of those steps is a place the defense can act, and the earliest ones matter most.

Can the accuser drop the charges?

No. In Texas the case belongs to the State, not the complainant, so the Tarrant County District Attorney decides whether it goes forward. A complainant can sign an affidavit of non-prosecution, and it can carry weight, but prosecutors here regularly proceed without the complainant's cooperation, and a recantation is treated with suspicion when it looks pressured. Never contact the accuser about the case yourself; that contact becomes its own charge.

What is indecency with a child?

Under Texas Penal Code 21.11, sexual contact with a child under 17, or causing the child to engage in it, is indecency by contact, a second-degree felony carrying two to twenty years. Exposing yourself to a child, or causing the child to expose themselves, with intent to arouse or gratify anyone, is indecency by exposure, a third-degree felony. Both require registration. The intent element is where many of these cases are defended, and the recorded forensic interview is where they are usually built. Our indecency with a child guide covers the statute in full.

Have a different question? Ask Deandra answers the ones people ask in the first call, and the Tarrant County court guide covers the building itself.
