Why Choose Deandra Grant Law for Federal Criminal Defense in Texas

Choosing a federal criminal defense attorney is one of the most consequential decisions you will ever make. Federal cases are fundamentally different from state cases — different courts, different rules of procedure, different sentencing systems, different investigative agencies, and different stakes. The attorney you choose needs deep experience in the federal system, the ability to challenge the government’s evidence at a technical level, and the resources to present your complete story to the sentencing judge. Deandra Grant Law offers three advantages in federal criminal defense that no other firm in the Dallas-Fort Worth area can match. These are not marketing claims. They are specific, verifiable capabilities that directly affect the outcome of federal cases.

Advantage 1: 25+ Years of Federal Trial Experience

Attorney James Lee Bright leads our federal criminal defense practice. Lee has been defending clients in federal courts for more than a quarter century. His experience is not limited to plea negotiations and sentencing hearings. He has tried federal cases to verdict, including a three-month federal trial in the District of Columbia that brought national prominence and was covered by legal and news organizations around the world. What this means for you:
      • Federal prosecutors respect experienced trial attorneys. Prosecutors know which defense attorneys are willing and able to try a case, and this knowledge influences every stage of the case from plea negotiations to pretrial motions to sentencing recommendations. An attorney who has never tried a federal case does not carry the same weight.
      • Lee is admitted to seven federal courts. All four U.S. District Courts in Texas (Northern, Eastern, Southern, Western), the District of Columbia, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. Wherever your case is in Texas, Lee is already admitted.
      • Lee has handled thousands of cases. Drug trafficking and conspiracy, firearms offenses, fraud, child exploitation, identity theft, money laundering, and more. He has seen every prosecutorial tactic and developed effective responses to each one.
      • Lee understands federal sentencing. The U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, mandatory minimums, safety valve eligibility, substantial assistance motions, and §3553(a) variance arguments — Lee has navigated all of them, many times.
      Recognition:
      • Super Lawyers® (2021–2024)
      • D Magazine Best Lawyers — multiple appearances
      • President, Dallas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (2010–2011)
      • M. in International Law, SMU Dedman School of Law
      • Phi Delta Phi national honor fraternity

      Advantage 2: ACS-CHAL Forensic Lawyer-Scientist Credentials

Deandra M. Grant and Douglas E. Huff are both trained in forensics and have both obtained the ACS-CHAL Forensic Lawyer-Scientist designation. Deandra has a Masters Degree in Pharmaceutical Science and a graduate certificate in Forensic Toxicology. What this means for you:
      • We evaluate the government’s forensic evidence ourselves. We review raw laboratory data such as chromatograms, calibration records, quality control data and not just the summary report.
      • We find errors other attorneys miss. Issues that are invisible in the final report become apparent when you understand the underlying science and can review the lab data.
      • We develop stronger cross-examination. When we challenge a forensic analyst on the stand, we ask questions that go to the heart of the methodology, not surface-level questions that the analyst can easily deflect.
      • In drug cases, this training is directly relevant to sentencing. Federal mandatory minimums are triggered by drug type and quantity. The government’s quantity evidence comes from forensic laboratory analysis using GC-MS, LC-MS or GC-FID which are the analytical methods our training covers. An error in quantification can change a 5-year mandatory minimum to a 10-year minimum, or a 10-year minimum to life.
